Spinal Decompression Therapy in Salisbury, MD: A Non-Surgical Option for Back Pain

4 min read

If you have been dealing with ongoing back pain, sciatica, or a bulging or herniated disc, you may have heard about spinal decompression therapy. For some patients, non-surgical spinal decompression can be incorporated into a conservative treatment plan designed to address certain types of back and disc-related problems.

At Shakley Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Salisbury, MD, we offer non-surgical spinal decompression therapy for appropriate patients with back pain and related conditions.

Our office serves Salisbury and communities throughout Maryland's Eastern Shore, giving patients a local option for spinal decompression.

What Is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression?

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a treatment that uses a specialized table to gently and gradually apply controlled distraction to the spine.

Unlike a traditional traction table that may apply a more constant pulling force, modern spinal decompression equipment can vary the amount of distraction throughout treatment.

The goal is to reduce mechanical stress on certain areas of the spine and provide a controlled environment that may be helpful for some patients with disc-related back pain and nerve irritation.

There are no injections or surgical procedures involved.

What Conditions May Be Treated With Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression is not appropriate for every type of back pain. However, after an examination, it may be considered for certain patients experiencing conditions such as:

  • Bulging discs

  • Herniated discs

  • Degenerative disc problems

  • Sciatica

  • Disc-related lower back pain

  • Certain types of nerve irritation

  • Chronic or recurring back pain

Because several different conditions can produce similar symptoms, determining what is actually contributing to your pain is important before beginning treatment.

Spinal Decompression for Bulging and Herniated Discs

The discs between the vertebrae of your spine act as cushions and help your back move normally.

When a disc becomes damaged or degenerates over time, it may bulge or herniate. Depending on its location and severity, this can contribute to lower back pain and irritation of nearby nerves.

A disc problem in the lower back can also cause symptoms that extend beyond the spine. Some people experience pain, numbness, tingling, or other symptoms traveling into the buttock or leg.

Spinal decompression may be considered as part of a conservative treatment plan for certain patients with these types of disc-related problems.

Spinal Decompression for Sciatica

Sciatica generally refers to symptoms associated with irritation or compression involving the sciatic nerve or the nerve roots that contribute to it.

Symptoms can include lower back pain along with pain, numbness, tingling, or other sensations traveling through the buttock and into the leg.

Because sciatica has several possible causes, treatment should begin with an evaluation rather than assuming every case should be treated the same way.

If a spinal disc problem is contributing to the nerve irritation, spinal decompression may be one treatment option considered.

What Does Spinal Decompression Feel Like?

During treatment, you lie on a specialized spinal decompression table and are positioned according to the area being treated.

The equipment then applies controlled distraction according to the treatment settings selected for you.

Treatment is non-surgical and does not involve injections.

Many patients find the treatment comfortable. Your individual treatment settings and schedule will depend on your condition and examination findings.

Is Spinal Decompression the Same as Chiropractic?

No. Spinal decompression and chiropractic care are different treatments, although they may complement each other for certain patients.

Chiropractic care can focus on joint mobility, movement, and other musculoskeletal factors. Spinal decompression provides a different type of mechanical treatment directed toward the spine.

At Shakley Chiropractic & Wellness Center, we can also incorporate physical therapy and rehabilitation when appropriate.

This gives us the ability to develop a treatment plan based on the individual patient rather than trying to treat every back problem with a single technique.

Do I Need an MRI Before Spinal Decompression?

Not necessarily.

Some patients already have an MRI or other diagnostic imaging when they come to our office. Others have never had advanced imaging.

Whether imaging is appropriate depends on your symptoms, history, examination findings, and other factors.

If you already have recent imaging or reports related to your back problem, bringing them with you can provide additional information when evaluating your condition.

How Do I Know if Spinal Decompression Is Right for Me?

The first step is an evaluation.

Spinal decompression isn't something that should automatically be recommended simply because someone has back pain. We want to understand your symptoms, how the problem started, what makes it better or worse, and whether your examination suggests that decompression may be appropriate.

Some patients may be better candidates for chiropractic care or rehabilitation. Others may benefit from a treatment plan that incorporates spinal decompression along with other conservative treatments.

If we don't believe spinal decompression is appropriate for your condition, we'll tell you.
